Exploring Bergen-Belsen with a Tablet

In 2016, the Bergen-Belsen Memorial introduced a new way for visitors to explore the former concentration camp—through a tablet app. This project, inspired by the grandson of a deceased inmate, Paul Verschure, uses 3D animations to give visitors a deeper understanding of the camp’s layout, which is now mostly gone.

Initially, there were concerns about the appropriateness of using digital technology in such a solemn place. However, survivors appreciated the app, seeing it as a way to continue telling the camp’s story even when they are no longer able to do so.

The app is especially popular with school groups, but visitors of all ages use it to navigate the memorial. Feedback has been largely positive, with some requesting more detailed or realistic representations of the buildings.
