Accessing Campscapes
IC_ACCESS: INCLUSIVE STRATEGIES FOR EUROPEAN CONFLICTED PASTS

IC-ACCESS examines campscapes as significant sites of memory within Europe’s political and cultural histories of the past century. The project analyzes these locations as reflections of both contemporary social and political events and as expressions of historical narratives. It explores how memories of these sites are continuously rewritten through narratives, material presence, and personal testimonies, highlighting the complex and often contentious nature of remembrance. By adopting a transnational and historically interconnected approach, IC-ACCESS aims to enhance research, preservation, and presentation practices related to campscapes. Funded by HERA for three years (2016-2019), the project seeks to promote a more inclusive understanding of historical interdependencies and the circulation of memorial practices, ultimately developing accessible and engaging tools to foster a balanced and reflective appreciation of these vulnerable and contested heritage sites.
